Better Late Than Never Better Late Than Never by Kimberla Lawson Roby
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Description
Curtis Black is no stranger to scandal. Throughout the decades, he has done much in the public eye, both good and evil. But what most people don't realize is that Curtis has been hiding a horrific childhood that has affected him in countless, unspeakable ways.

His buried past returns in an unwelcome visit when his estranged sister becomes alarmingly ill and his youngest child, twelve-year-old Curtina, becomes the kind of problem daughter that he never imagined she could be. This is only the beginning. The horror of Curtis's childhood secrets, as well as Curtina's wild and rebellious behavior, takes a critical toll on Curtis and the entire Black family. All the public scandals they've experienced over the years now seem like child's play compared to the turmoil they are facing in private. Who could have known that the deepest wounds would come from within?

Book Review
The final chapter of the Curtis black saga. (Of course, there could be a spinoff with the grandchildren and Curtina.) The synopsis described the previous drama to this family as “child’s play compared to the turmoil they are facing” now. With the hint of something coming back from the past being “unwelcomed”, I waited for something to happen…..and I waited….and then waited some more. And then I received what was supposed to be that “something”. A familial relationship was repaired & someone slipped back into their addiction with little fanfare. The one storyline that had the potential to breathe some much-needed drama was with one of the youngest Black family members. And it was glazed over. The buildup of that storyline was hushed as silently as a church member raising that one finger as they walk out during Sunday morning service. This series is known for its salacious drama.

While it was nice to get some background on Curtis’ family, I feel let down. At any rate, this was a good series overall. Even when there was a lull, you still wanted to know what was going to happen next. I suppose with all the drama that the family endured this somber and somewhat bland final book was a fitting end in some respect.
