SYNOPSIS
When it comes to law and order, East Texas plays by its own rules--a fact that Darren Mathews, a black Texas Ranger, knows all too well. Deeply ambivalent about growing up black in the lone star state, he was the first in his family to get as far away from Texas as he could. Until duty called him home.

When his allegiance to his roots puts his job in jeopardy, he travels up Highway 59 to the small town of Lark, where two murders--a black lawyer from Chicago and a local white woman--have stirred up a hornet's nest of resentment. Darren must solve the crimes--and save himself in the process--before Lark's long-simmering racial fault lines erupt.

                                     BOOK REVIEW
"Their lives revolved around the people they claim to hate, but couldn't leave alone."
Ranger Matthews

The story was a slow, scenic ride to solving what would ultimately be 3 murders, a cover-up, a drug ring and the dissolution of a local hate group. The story follows Darren Matthew a Texas Ranger. He puts himself in a precarious situation that gives those who didn't want him in the organization ammunition to remove him from the field. That is until a phone call from a long-time friend thrusts him into yet another situation that may mean the end of his career. The story moved extremely slow, but I could not stop listening. Locke infused the story with such vivid imagery that you could see the Ice House and its occupants. You could smell the alcohol coming out of Darren's pores due to the drink that had become a crutch to him after he lost his wife's emotional support.
She, Locke, also did a great job of capturing the racial tension that still exists today. The characters were developed and the plot was executed in a way that grabbed my attention early on. A huge boost for the audio was the narrator, JD Jackson, who did a superb job. I recommend this book to anyone who likes an easy listen and a scenic route to solving a mystery.
